If so, you’re not alone. We hear from people looking for the right opportunity on a regular basis!
While we’re not matchmakers and can’t pair volunteers with organizations, we do have a few tricks up our sleeves to help. Follow the four steps below to begin your journey and find the volunteer opportunity that’s right for you.
- Ask yourself: Where are you currently involved? What causes really interest you? Where do you already donate? What organizations pique your interest every time you hear or read about them in the news or on social media?
- Ask people who know you best to help you brainstorm organizations or causes that match your capabilities and strengths. Dig deep into what’s important to you.
- Choose 3-5 orgs that you’re interested in. Put out feelers to those orgs, letting them know that you’re a supporter and are looking to serve on a board. Ask them if anyone (board member or staff member) would be willing to chat with you about board service in person or over the phone. Ask the right questions to find out what the orgs are really like.
- Approach it like a job search, except this is one that is always “hiring”! Member term limits mean someone is always cycling off the board, and organizations are looking for replacements with the skills and perspectives they need. If the timing isn’t right, or if the organization already has a few people lined up for open positions, be patient. Consider joining a committee or volunteering for the organization first to get your foot in the door.
The key is to jump in and get involved. Board service can be gratifying and beneficial for everyone involved.
